Zannis Mavrogordato is a British citizen specialising in international commercial and investment arbitration and mediation. He is dual qualified as an English barrister and French avocat and has conducted international arbitration proceedings in English and French on behalf of governments and multinational corporations in the construction, energy, mining, finance and telecommunications sectors. Zannis has worked in London, Paris and Bucharest and has a particular focus on disputes with a connection to CEE and CCIS.

Representation and/or advising on:

  • Counsel to Swedish investors in the context of a circa USD 75 million BIT investment arbitration claim (ICSID) against the Government of Bulgaria arising out of the termination of a concession agreement in the waste management sector;
  • Counsel to a Korean multinational petrochemicals company in relation to a potential ICSID arbitration against the Government of Pakistan;
  • Counsel to a major French bank in the context of lengthy pre-arbitration negotiations against the Government of Montenegro in the context of a dispute arising out of the privatization of an aluminium plant;
  • Counsel to a major French bank in connection with a USD 300 million ICC arbitration (seat London, Swiss governing law) against a Russian billionaire arising out of a SPA to purchase a 50% interest in a Russian bank. This case involved seeking and obtaining Freezing Orders and Anti-Suit Injunctions in London, Bermuda and the British Virgin Islands, and defending parallel proceedings commenced by the billionaire in Russia;
  • Counsel to a Turkish billionaire in a USD 2.2 billion dispute against Motorola, involving proceedings and Freezing Orders applications in the UK (Court of Appeal and petition to the House of Lords), Switzerland (ICC arbitration, seat Zurich, Swiss governing law), Bermuda, Guernsey, Jersey, Isle of Man, France, Germany, Turkey and the US;
  • Counsel to a major French insurance company in connection with a USD 100 million ICC arbitration (seat Geneva, English governing law) against a Russian billionaire arising out of a joint venture agreement in the Russian insurance sector;
  • Counsel to a pool of French, English and US insurers in the context of a USD 300 million ICC arbitration (seat Paris, UAE governing law) against a US aerospace manufacturer arising out of the construction of a satellite;
  • Counsel to a Japanese car manufacturer in the context of a USD 75 million JCAA arbitration (seat Tokyo, Japanese governing law) arising out of an exclusive distributorship agreement; 
  • Counsel to a Swiss multinational in the context of a USD 15 million CICA arbitration arising out of an exclusive distributorship agreement in the food sector (seat Bucharest, Romanian governing law); 
  • Counsel to a consortium of investors in the context of preparing multi-billion dollar SCC arbitration proceedings, and potential BIT/ECT arbitration proceedings, against two Romanian State-owned energy companies arising out of the construction of a power plant in Romania;
  • Counsel to a Turkish construction company in the context of a Euro 100 million ICC arbitration (seat Geneva, Ukrainian governing law) against a Ukrainian State-owned railway company regarding the construction  of a bridge over the river Dnieper; 
  • Counsel to a German construction company regarding EOT and additional cost negotiations, two DAB referrals and potential ICC arbitration proceedings arising out of railway bridge rehabilitation project in Romania (FIDIC Red Book);
