Practice Areas 
Vakhtang Shevardnadze is a partner whose legal practices are concentrated in commercial and international business as well as public law, and it addresses the areas of commercial and contract laws, project finance, telecommunications, regulatory, trade law and general business. He also is competent in comparative legal studies, public and private international laws, constitutional law and legal analysis.
He represents clients in Georgia on:
  • International consultation on government regulations, trade policy, economic issues and legislative initiatives;
  • International transactions, investments and joint ventures;
  • Trade facilitation, finance and logistics;
  • Export/import practices and management plans;
  • Trade and business strategies;
  • Telecommunications and electronic commerce issues;
  • Natural resources; and
  • General matters including a broad scope of global business.
Experience 
Mr. Shevardnadze began his practice in 1986. In 1994, he accepted a political appointment to serve four years with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia in positions involving dealing with the United Nations, its organs and specialized agencies/programs. Mr. Shevardnadze served as Deputy Head of UN Division before he left the Ministry. In 1998, Mr. Shevardnadze joined Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Tbilisi, Georgia in the capacity of legal advisor. On this post he assisted the Office with outreach and educational programs for national authorities, non-governmental organizations and the general public; provided support to Georgian authorities regarding creation and implementation of legislation; prepared draft laws and amendments, conducted trainings for UNHCR staff, mass-media representatives, NGOs and governmental representatives. In 2001, Mr. Shevardnadze resigned from the legal advisor’s post and joined the MKD law firm in 2002. From 2001, Mr. Shevardnadze has lectured on public international law. He is a lecturer with the Law School of Tbilisi State University.
 
He is a member of the Georgian Lawyers’ Union.
 

Representation and/or advising on:

  • Advising Pacific International Co. on lease transactions for Boeing aircrafts; 
  • Advising Chevron Texaco on corporate changes into Georgian special purpose vehicles;
  • Advising Veolia, a major French water company, in course of a bidding for assets of Tbilisi Water Company and some other water utilities;
  • Advising Chevron on various regulatory issues for purposes of transshipment operations;
  • Performing a due diligence on Tbilisi natural gas distribution company for Tahal;
  • Representing Caspian Wireline Services to set up a corporate present under Georgian law and on certain licensing/permitting requirements;
  • Advising RomPetrol on legal ramifications for entry into local market;
  • Advising Capital Turbines Australia with regard to the Gardabani power plant construction;
  • Advising IPA Consulting in course of preparatory works for introducing a private management of the Vartsikhe Hydro Power Cascade (the major hydro power source) finded by KfW inter-state loan;
  • Advising Chevron Texaco on oil and natural gas related regulatory issues with regard to a potential project;
  • Advising ROMPETROL, a major Romanian company, on a range of legal issues related to setting up a regional network of oil delivery and supply infrastructure; 
  • Assisting Chevron Texaco with a local law advice on railroad transshipments;
  • Advising the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development on financing of restructuring and development of the Tbilisi Railway Station and construction of the shopping mall;
  • Advising the International Finance Corporation on financing of restructuring and development of the Tbilisi Railway Station and construction of the shopping mall;
  • Advising the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development on financing the rehabilitation and improvement of the municipal water supply infrastructure in the city of Tbilisi;
  • Advising the World Bank on Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Project on the Rikoti Tunnel infrastructure development; 
  • Advising the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development on financing construction of infrastructure utilities-the major oil terminal in Poti on the Georgian Black Sea coast;
  • Advising Northrop-Grumman Corporation on some contractual issues for local air industry; 
  • Advising AEROFLOT on options for purchasing a stake in a major Georgian air company; 
  • Advising Babcock&Brown International Group on lease transactions for aircrafts in Georgia; 
  • Advising White&Case LLP (Fl USA) on lease transactions for Boeing aircrafts; 
  • Advising CIT Corporation (USA) on lease transactions for Boeing aircrafts in Georgia; 
  • Advising GE Commercial Aviation Services (Ireland) on lease transactions for Boeing aircrafts; 
  • Advising Eurex Airlines LLC (Turkey) on lease transactions for Boeing aircrafts in Georgia; 
  • Advising Tusheti Air LLC (Georgia) on lease transactions for helicopters outside Georgia; 
  • Advising Deutsche Structured Fund regarding the legal/regulatory matters of first financial leasing of the aircraft to the Georgian major air carrier; 
  • Advising IATA on tax and regulatory matters of its operations in Georgia 
  • Advising Erste Group and Galaxy Aviation Ireland Two Limited on legal and regulatory aspects of leasing and regulation of aircraft in Georgia;
